the quintessential 21st century American
The quintessential twenty first century American is asked to be more than our forefathers were. We are asked to be environmentalists, intellectuals, and patriots. The twenty first century American is supposed to be able to put aside their foolish pride and do what is needed. The days of John Wayne have seen their last sunrise as we are flourishing into a smarter younger more politically correct century. Men and women now share roles, men are in the kitchen and women are truck mechanics. Men are now being asked to be more sensitive and woman and more independent. We are moving closer and closer to gender and racial equality. It is truly an exciting and scary time to be an American. We are discovering newer greener technologies however we are also discovering newer bigger problems. It is our jobs to ensure our survival and solve our problems with oil dependency and pollution. The world is growing smaller and the problems are growing bigger and there is nothing we can do but come up with big solutions. American culture as we know it has changed astronomically from when our parents generation were growing up. Rock and roll and sock hops have taken a back seat to rap and hip hop clubs. Americans are now more sensitive, intelligent, and racially diverse than ever and are forever growing as individuals. The twenty first century American is a fluid individual capable of changing constantly with the technology that we are more and more reliant on.

I think you've touched on some important characteristics. I agree that the average 21st century American is more sensitive to ethnic diversity, responsibility to our environment, and ever-changing technology. Our young nation has come quite a long way in a very short time, but does that necessarily mean that we are more intelligent than our forefathers? Our public school system is failing, American youth rank far bellow most other developed nations on standardized tests, 1 in 7 adults is functionally illiterate, and most popular writing such as general interest books, newspapers, and magazines are written at a 3rd grade reading level.
ReplyDeleteI agree totally with your posting as well as Ms. Tiff's comment this world has come so far I believe we have created more problems than what we can fix before we engage in newer ideas that create more problems for the americans. I do believe more americans have strived for more education in their lives than in the years of my grandparents, but thats not to say that the education is far better.I believe more people should relish in the ideas of being content with their lives in general than trying to create more for themselves. One person is not the only person affected by someones new idea and it creates hardships for americans.
ReplyDeleteI think you brought up some great issues. I never thought of the gender rolls. I think that that is a positive change compared to some of the negative changes. I agree that the need to improve ourselves has overlapped and contributed to people not being happy with what they have. Maybe technology will lead us to some of the answers to these bigger problems.
ReplyDeleteFinding out about the results of standardized testing is very alarming. I hope that some organizations are looking into how to fix this or our future doesn't look bright. One good thing might be that it will safegaurd the work market for our age generations as our generations will be ahead of them so will still be employable.
